Mayse Drives to Top Dragster Victory with a little help from his friends!

Frost, TX: 2005 BTE Million Dollar Race runner-up Robbie Mayse claimed his second NHRA LODRS victory (first in Top Dragster) last weekend at the Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX at the wheel of his new American Race Cars Swing Arm Mono-Shock Dragster. Mayse, like anyone, would have been elated with his success, but this particular event was even more special for the soft-spoken Texan, as he had a pit crew of over 30 children from his local First Baptist Church of Frost on hand for the event.

“We came up with the idea a while back,” explained Mayse. “We got up early Sunday morning, met the kids at church, and headed to the track. We all went to chapel service at the event. I wanted to do that to show these young people that God can be worshiped anywhere you are--even at the race track!”

Robbie, who competes with son Rustin in a fleet that currently includes six competition vehicles, entered the event in Top Dragster and Super Comp Eliminator, while Rustin drove his new American Race Cars machine in Super Comp, along with the team’s roadster in Super Gas. Though the team dropped from competition early in the “Super Classes” (with Rustin falling in round one of both S/C and S/G, and Robbie advancing to third round in Super Comp), Robbie was able to wheel his new machine through a talented Top Dragster field for the class win over final round opponent Ronnie Hughes.

“We had a really fortunate day,” explained Mayse. “My American Race Cars Dragster was awesome all day long, and I drove the finish line pretty well, but I really struggled on the starting line. After losing in Super Comp, I really tried to focus on Top Dragster, all of the while thinking how special it would be for all of the youth that had come with us to get to experience and be a part of the winners circle.”

Mayse good driving and good fortune pushed him into the final round, opposite Ronnie Hughes. There, both drivers had .02 lights (with Hughes’ .021 bettering Mayse’s .025), setting up a dual at the finish line.

“In the final, I had dialed up some as both Ronnie and I were a little slow on our semi-final runs, and as the race progressed he was coming up on my real hard. At the finish line I think we both tried to dump each other off, and I got real lucky that he out-stopped me!” Mayse took the finish line by the slimmest of margins, .0003 to hold off Hughes with a 7.588 on his 7.57 dial-in.

“My cheering section I know was the biggest at the track,” said Mayse of his First Baptist Church of Frost Youth Group. “But I know there were rounds that I could not have been driving. These were answered prayers for all of us, and it was really exciting to share the winning experience with such a great group of children!”

Mayse thanked all of the youth from the small town of Frost, TX in addition to his team’s supporters: American Race Cars, TCI Automotive, Brodix Cylinder Heads, Milodon, APD, Comp Cams, Impact Racing, CSR Performance Products, Holley Performance, Auto Meter, and Edmond Richardson Motorsports for helping with the assembly of the team’s new American Race Cars.
